Why you may want to keep memorable property post-divorce

At some point in the days after deciding to divorce your spouse, you likely looked around your marital home at your shared possessions and thought about what you would like to keep and what you have no attachment to anymore. Perhaps you want to keep most of your possessions or perhaps you have little desire to keep much of anything that you shared with your spouse. You alone best understand what material possessions are likely to remain important to you in the wake of your divorce.

However, it is important to keep in mind that you may have the urge to purge certain possessions now that may prove to have sentimental value later on. While you are still grieving your marriage and navigating your divorce, you may not want to take a second look at gifts your spouse once gave you, pictures with both of you in them and other memorable property. These are the kinds of possessions that you may want to store safely away, even if you currently want to throw them away.

Recently, several media outlets reported that musical star Taylor Swift has kept mementos from each of her high-profile relationships. She supposedly uses these memorable possessions as inspiration for her music. By looking at old sweatshirts and guitar picks, she is better able to remember what it felt like to be involved in relationships with the previous owners of these goods.

Whether your memorable possessions may inspire art, valuable introspection or interesting conversations with your children, your relationship mementos just may be property worth saving.
